Why ShipIt?

ubuntu, logo, linuxUbuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) now can be pre-ordered in ShipIt. When I was filling the order form yesterday, I was wondering some questions: Are there any real needs for me to order free CDs from ShipIt? I can burn CD/DVDs myself, is this a kind of wasting resource?

In my hands, there are only 3 Ubuntu CDs with version 6.06. According to the request history in ShipIt, I’d ordered a BIG number of CDs so far. I don’t have a habit to collect CDs, but where were they?

I gave them away. From the age of Ubuntu 5.10, every time I went to help my friends to deal with computer problems, I alway passed the nicely printed Ubuntu CDs to them. Not all, but most of them were happy to try the new OS out and they remembered the brand of Ubuntu and the word Linux began to make sense to them.

I think people will easily pay their attentions to beautiful and serious things; therefore, these nicely printed “official” CDs really let Ubuntu stand out from the 300+ flavors of Linux distros and they also help a lot to spread Linux widely. This is the most important reason for me to make orders from ShipIt.

At this writing, ShipIt is very hard to visit. I hope this is because people are rushing to pre-order Gibbon. Have fun, people!
